Juan Munoz
Professional Bio:
Dr. Muñoz is the Senior Vice President for Institutional Diversity Equity, and Community Engagement and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education & Student Affairs. As the Senior Vice President and Vice Provost, Dr. Muñoz serves on the President’s Administrative Council, Provost’s Staff, Dean’s Council, Academic Council, Strategic Planning Council, Strategic Enrollment Planning Council, and is the Chair of the Texas Tech University System’s Outreach and Engagement System Priority.
A component of Dr. Muñoz’s portfolio as Senior Vice President and Vice Provost includes the oversight of university-wide academic support units, some of which include the Academic Testing Center, University Advising, the Center for Active Learning and Undergraduate Engagement (CALUE), the Teaching, Learning and Professional Development Center, Women’s Studies, Military & Veterans Programs, and Support Operations for Academic Retention (SOAR). As a representative of Texas Tech University, Dr. Muñoz serves on the Association of Public and Land Grant University’s (APLU) Commission on Access, Diversity and Excellence, is a member of the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education Board of Directors, and has been an appointed member of the Planning Committee for the National Outreach Scholarship Conference.
Dr. Muñoz also has an appointment in the College of Education as an Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction. He has served as Coordinator for the Bilingual Education and Diversity Studies program, Chair of the Graduate Academic Affairs Committee, and was a founding member and Director of the College of Education, Center for Research on Leadership and Education. Prior to joining Texas Tech, Dr. Muñoz was a faculty member in the Department of Secondary Education at California State University Fullerton (CSUF). In his capacity, he was a course custodian, an advisor to the Master Program in Secondary Education, and Director of Educational Programs for the Grand Central Art Complex CSUF, in Santa Ana, California. Dr. Muñoz has taught courses in classroom management, instructional methods, curriculum development, multi-cultural education, bilingual education, and critical social theory. His research interests include alternatives education for at-risk students and the learning needs of ethnically and linguistically diverse students in public schools.
Dr. Muñoz earned a B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. After returning from military service in the U.S. Marine Corps during the 1990-91 Gulf Crisis, he attended California State University, Los Angeles where he earned an M.A. degree in Mexican-American Studies with an emphasis in literature and literary theory. He earned his Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied Curriculum & Instruction in the Division of Urban Schooling. At UCLA he received the Chancellor’s Fair & Open Academic Environment Award and a fellowship from the Center for the Study of Urban Poverty and the Institute of American Cultures. Prior to attending UCLA, Dr. Muñoz was a secondary teacher, an instructor in the California Community College system, and an adjunct faculty member at Pacific Oakes and Whittier Colleges.
